What Makes High-End Fishing Coolers So Much Better than Regular Coolers

Over the years, the fishing coolers for sale on the market have become more durable and provide superb insulation. Today, it’s possible to buy a fishing cooler that will keep your food and drinks cold for several days.

While these coolers are a bit more expensive than your standard $20 Coleman ice chest from Walmart or another big-box retailer, many report only using a fraction of the amount of ice a standard budget cooler uses.

When you’re out on an open fishing vessel in the sun all day, you don’t want your ice to melt in 6 or 8 hours.  If you’re having a good day and need to preserve fish, it’s best they stay on ice the entire way back.

We’re not saying there’s anything wrong with a traditional cooler – they provide a low-cost way to carry your food, drinks, fish and bait. However, their plastic and foam construction don’t provide the insulation to last you more than a few hours on a hot day.

Durable high-end fishing coolers like the Yeti and Eddy-Gear brands may cost a bit more upfront, but they will provide the insulation you need and be strong enough to withstand the toughest conditions.

Many models in fact will hold ice for up to 10 days!

Below are a few specific items unique to high-end coolers that make them much more efficient and durable than their traditional low-cost counterparts.
·
  •        Rotational molded construction is an advanced method and material that holds up to the rigors of sun exposure, salt exposure and any shocks from being dropped. Traditional low-end coolers are simply foam and plastic, so while they may be okay in the short-term, they will soon wear out if heavily used.
  •      Polyurethane insulation is used for everything from building insulation to food-distribution trucks to commercial/home refrigerators. High-end fishing coolers simply take the incredible insulating properties of polyurethane and re-form it for a cooler (see more below).
  •      Rubber lid latches help keep the cold where it belongs, in your cooler. Many budget coolers simply don’t provide the seal to keep the cool air in.
  •        Stainless steel hinge pins and reinforced lock points provide exceptional protection against the abuse of constant saltwater and sun you see when fishing offshore.
  •        Cutting board built into the lid provides a surface for you to cut bait or clean a fish. Low-end cooler lids are not made to double as a cutting board.
  •       Built-in ruler in U.S. and Metric units allow you to easily measure your fish. As explained here, properly measuring your fish is key to determining if you can keep it or not.
  •       More durable inline skate style wheels that provide a low profile, reliable way to wheel your cooler around. If you have to pick it up, most high-end fishing coolers for sale will have rope handles that are more comfortable to handle.

In the end, probably the most advanced feature of high-end fishing coolers is the insulation. Advances in polyurethane insulation for buildings for example helps conserve energy while making occupants more comfortable. PU insulation is also thin for the insulating value it provides. In times gone by, it simply wasn’t possible to deliver the exceptional insulating value in something as portable as a Yeti or Eddy-Gear.

To illustrate, polyurethane insulation has the highest thermal resistance, or R-value, of any material of comparable thickness. Take a look at the chart below comparing different insulation materials.

If you’re a serious angler who goes out often and stays out for more than a few hours, you need a fishing cooler that will withstand the harsh environment where you’ll be using it. While they’ll probably work for a short time, budget coolers are built for at-home parties and sporting events, not the rigors of fishing on the open ocean.

Additional features like the built-in ruler and cutting board also makes high-end fishing coolers a handy addition to any boat.

Eddy-Gear’s high-end coolers are available in 20 Liter, 50 Liter and 75 Liter volume. If you’re fishing, especially offshore, the 50 or 75-liter coolers will provide ample space for keeping your fish icy cold for the trip home.
